Head of Law and Governance

The role

You’ll act as the lead professional advisor to the council on all aspects of law and governance, and fulfil the statutory role of Monitoring Officer. You’ll work closely with your team to ensure that the services within your portfolio are delivered to the highest professional standards, with excellent customer service and value for money embedded into every stage. Service areas that fall within this role’s remit include:

  • shared legal service;
  • information governance;
  • procurement and contracts;
  • democratic services;
  • electoral services; and
  • the Mayor’s office.

As a member of the council’s Strategic Leadership team you will also have the opportunity to contribute at a corporate level, often working outside your own professional specialism. 

You will be a qualified solicitor or barrister with significant experience at a senior level of dealing with legal and governance issues in local government, including advising councillors and senior officers on complex legal and governance matters.  You will bring a strong people management perspective and will have a focus on creating a positive culture, on continuous improvement, and on translating ambitions in to real achievements. Working across a portfolio of services that attract considerable attention and scrutiny, it’s essential that you understand the dynamics of working within a political setting.
